The drive to Denver from Moab is longer than we wanted to do in one day, so we chose a destination midway where we could spend the night. That town is Glenwood Springs, CO.
We slept in today because we didn’t really have much of anything planned other than driving to our next hotel. We paid too much for a quick breakfast at McDonalds, gassed up, then took State Highway 128 instead of the interstate because Jeff was familiar with the beauty there. Much of the road followed the Colorado River through a state park, and I was snapping as many pictures as I could on the road. It took us through so many different landscapes, from red rock buttes, to verdant river valleys, to deserted open range.
As we neared where the state road joined I-70, we passed through the ghost town of Cisco. I always envisioned ghost towns like what I’ve seen on TV, with dilapidated banks and saloons. This town was more a conglomeration of rusting metal, ramshackle trailers, and broken down shacks. Incredibly, there were people living there, and my assumption is they want to be left alone.
After getting on the interstate, we decided to pull off in Grand Junction to eat at Qdoba. While we were there, Jeff searched for things to do in the area so we would not arrive at our hotel with a wasted day. He happened to find Colorado National Monument, a smallish national park just a few minutes away, and not really out of our way to Glenwood Springs. It was incredibly beautiful, and I’m glad he found it, even though I’d never heard of it. It was mostly driving and getting out of the car at overlooks, and the viewpoints were not difficult to walk to. We even had bighorn sheep come right up to the road to pose. I think we got some great pictures of this place.

Our hotel, Hanging Lake Inn, is very nice, with a plus of having our room on the ground floor. We checked in, and then decided on Rocky Mountain Pizza Company for supper. We had to park about a block away and walk to the restaurant, which is in downtown. The pizza was so good, with a just right amount of sauce, gooey cheese, mild sausage, and crispy crust.
Glenwood Springs puts me in mind of Gatlinburg, pretty touristy and situated on a long strip of businesses. It’s pretty at night, and Jeff said we would need to come back here sometime to spend the whole day.
Tomorrow, we will fly out of Denver on a night time flight, so we are trying to figure out what to do during the daytime hours in the big city. We look forward to our own bed, but we also are sad to see the vacation end.
