Glenwood Springs to Nashville

Jeff woke before I did this morning, getting things ready to go. We left around 9:15 from the hotel and went for breakfast at the 19th Street Diner. We both had omelettes with potatoes and sourdough toast. Jeff had me eat his potatoes, and he ate a couple of my pieces of toast. From there, we started the long drive to Denver.

I must say, I don’t understand why Coloradans decided they needed to legalize pot so everyone can get high when the scenery should be more than enough to give a person a buzz. The first snow of the season came through midweek, and while most had melted by the time we came through, there was enough on the mountains and trees to make everywhere we looked beautiful. I hope we can come back to Colorado again and spend more time getting that natural “Rocky Mountain high.”

Alas, we had to enter a big city in order to leave. I have never liked big cities, and Denver is no exception. However, we made the most of our time by touring the Four Mile Historical Park, an open air museum of Western life in the latter 1800s. The Four Mile House is the oldest home in Denver, the first part of three construction phases being completed in 1859. It was a wayside inn for part of its history, and then a private farmer’s residence. It was nearly razed in the late 1970s by a mayor who had no appreciation for history. Luckily some more civic minded people worked to save it, and now the city owns it, and volunteers run it. In addition to the main house, there are several other buildings reflecting the Old West.

When we finished the tour, we drove to Atomic Cowboy/ Fat Sully’s, as shown on Diners, Driveins, and Dives. The pizza taste was just okay. I think the hoopla is about the size of the slices, which are quite massive.

We finally made our way to return the car at Thrifty after some traffic backups (another reason I dislike big cities). We caught the shuttle over, and after taking out 5 pounds from our checked bag to avoid a 75 dollar fee, we got through security and to our gate with a couple of hours to spare. I will be very glad to sleep in our own bed tonight.
